Scuba Diving at the Blue Hole

Scuba Diving at the Blue Hole

It is impossible to write about living and buying real estate in Belize at Sanctuary Bay, without touching on the Blue Hole.

Located about 60 miles east of the north Belize coastline, this massive underwater sinkhole lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef.

It is more than 1,000 feet across and 480 feet deep. The Blue Hole was formed during the last ice age when limestone caves repeatedly collapsed.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau named The Blue Hole one of the top 4 dive sites around the world, so for all you scuba divers out there - this is a must visit spot.

Tapir at the Belize Zoo

Tapir at the Belize Zoo

Say you are having a hard time finding or spotting the native wildlife in Belize - don’t despair, there is a zoo in Belize City.

Although Belize City is a couple hour bus ride from your home at Sanctuary Bay, the drive is well worth it.  The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center spans 29 acres of tropical savanna and has over 125 native Belize animals.

Many of these animals were either orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated, or sent to The Belize Zoo as donations from other zoological institutions.

The zoo is very important to the country as an educational facility about the native animals that many of the Belize residents know little about, yet live next to every day.

It is also a great chance for new Belize inhabitants to learn more about the animals that habitat the surrounding area.

Wind Swept Trees in Belize

Wind Swept Trees in Belize

After purchasing real estate in Belize, you will begin to settle into your new life in a foreign, tropical country.  Part of living in a new country is learning about the countries celebrations and festivals.

Village festivals are frequent and other country wide celebrations include a strong fall line up.

St. George’s Caye Day and Independence celebrations are in September, Columbus day in October, and in November there is Garifuna Settlement Day and the National Festival of Arts.

Celebrations aren’t the only time you can find nightlife or excitement in Belize though.

Many restaurants and bars provide entertainment including bands playing country and rock music, as well as local “Punta” music.  Punta music is a unique drumming music that gives out a Caribbean vibe.
